Central Processing Unit (CPU) - Technician

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) Technician is a vital member of the healthcare facility responsible for the efficient processing, sterilization, and distribution of medical instruments and equipment. The role involves handling and preparing medical devices, maintaining strict infection control standards, and ensuring the availability of sterile instruments for medical procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Instrument Sterilization: Properly clean, disinfect, and sterilize medical instruments, surgical tools, and equipment following established protocols and infection control guidelines.

2. Equipment Preparation: Prepare and assemble instrument trays, surgical packs, and other equipment necessary for medical procedures based on predetermined lists and physician preferences.

3. Inspection and Maintenance: Inspect instruments for damage, functionality, and cleanliness, and arrange for repairs or replacements as needed to maintain a high standard of quality.

4. Inventory Management: Monitor and manage inventory levels of sterile supplies, restocking and ordering items to ensure an adequate supply for various departments within the healthcare facility.

5. Compliance and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of instrument sterilization, equipment maintenance, and inventory management to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.

6. Collaboration: Collaborate with nurses, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to understand their instrument requirements and ensure timely availability of sterile supplies for procedures.

7. Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain sterilization equipment, such as autoclaves and sonic cleaners, following manufacturer instructions and safety protocols.

8. Safety and Infection Control: Adhere to strict safety protocols and infection control measures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the handling of potentially infectious materials.

9. Continuous Improvement: Suggest and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Central Processing Unit's operations.

10. Training and Education: Participate in ongoing training sessions and educational programs to stay updated on the latest sterilization techniques, equipment, and infection control practices.

Qualifications and Requirements:

1. NCII ; additional certification in Central Sterile Processing is preferred.

2. Previous experience in Central Processing, Sterile Processing, or a related field is advantageous.

3. Knowledge of proper sterilization techniques, infection control practices, and medical terminology.

4. Familiarity with different types of medical instruments and equipment used in various medical procedures.

5. Understanding of safety protocols and the ability to handle potentially hazardous materials safely.

6. Excellent attention to detail to ensure the proper cleaning and sterilization of instruments.

7. Strong organizational skills to manage inventory and maintain accurate records.

8. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines.

9. Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with various healthcare professionals.
