Job Description: Medical Technologist (HIV Proficient)

Position Summary:

The Medical Technologist proficient in HIV testing and diagnostics is responsible for performing laboratory tests and analyses to diagnose and monitor HIV infections. This role includes the preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, and interpretation of test results in accordance with established protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Specimen Collection and Preparation:

- Collect blood and other specimens while adhering to safety guidelines.

- Prepare specimens for analysis according to laboratory procedures.

2. Testing and Analysis:

- Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests for HIV, including ELISA, Western Blot, and viral load testing.

- Ensure accurate and timely processing of all tests.

3. Quality Control:

- Conduct quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.

- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment in accordance with regulatory standards.

4. Data Management:

- Document and report test results in the laboratory information system.

- Ensure proper record-keeping and adherence to confidentiality protocols.

5. Collaboration and Communication:

- Work closely with healthcare providers to interpret test results and provide insights for patient management.

- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and workshops.

6. Education and Training:

- Provide training and guidance to laboratory staff on HIV testing procedures and safety protocols.

- Stay updated on the latest developments in HIV diagnostics and treatment.

7. Compliance and Safety:

- Follow all health and safety regulations, including biohazard waste disposal and infection control measures.

- Participate in laboratory accreditation processes and audits.

Qualifications:

1 . Education:

- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.

2. Licensure and Certification:

- Must be licensed as a Medical Technologist

- With HIV Certification/Training

3. Experience:

- Minimum of 1 year experience in a clinical laboratory setting, with a focus on HIV testing and diagnostics.

- Familiarity with laboratory instruments and HIV testing methodologies.

4. Skills:

- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills for interpreting test results.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with healthcare teams and patients.

- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

5. Technical Proficiency:

- Proficient in operating laboratory equipment and utilizing laboratory information systems.

- Knowledge of current laboratory safety practices and quality control procedures.

6. Personal Attributes:

- Strong ethical standards and understanding of patient confidentiality.

- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
