The specialist will collaborate with bedside nursing staff and designated medical providers to help identify concerns, support appropriate troubleshooting, and facilitate timely clinical escalation.

An RN or LVN will remain physically present at each facility, with clinical care coordinated by designated medical providers. The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on experience managing mechanically ventilated patients, strong critical thinking skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and confidently through real-time video consultations.

  • Provide remote guidance to on-site RNs and LVNs regarding ventilator operation, equipment functionality, and established procedures.
  • Assist staff with understanding ventilator settings, breathing circuits, connections, and common equipment alarms.
  • Help identify potential equipment-related concerns and guide staff through established troubleshooting procedures.
  • Become familiar with the specific ventilator models, circuits, and respiratory equipment used across both facilities.
  • Support staff in interpreting ventilator displays, alarm notifications, and equipment readings.
  • Assist/guide staff in adjusting appropriate settings; and assist staff in documenting such adjustments.
  • Recognize situations requiring escalation to medical providers, respiratory therapists, equipment vendors, or emergency services.

Tracheostomy and/or Ventilator Troubleshooting & Patient Response Support

  • Assist on-site nursing staff with evaluating patient responses during ventilator alarms and equipment-related concerns.
  • Help staff recognize potential causes of ventilator alarms, including circuit disconnections, airway resistance, and other equipment or patient-related factors.
  • Guide bedside nurses in gathering and communicating relevant observations, including oxygen saturation, respiratory patterns, patient comfort, and ventilator readings.
  • Provide real-time video consultation to support troubleshooting and recognition of potential respiratory deterioration.
  • Help staff distinguish between equipment-related issues and situations requiring immediate clinical escalation.
  • Collaborate with on-site nurses and designated medical providers to support timely and appropriate responses to ventilator-related concerns.
  • Reinforce established emergency procedures, physician-approved protocols, and appropriate escalation pathways.

Overnight On-Call Support & Communication

  • Remain available during assigned overnight hours (10 hours from 8 pm to 6 am, but can be modified as the need arises) to respond promptly to questions from facility nursing staff.
  • Participate in real-time video or audio consultations to assist with tracheostomy circuit and ventilator-related concerns.
  • Communicate clearly and calmly with staff during urgent or time-sensitive situations.
  • Coordinate with designated medical providers and facility leadership when issues require clinical decisions or additional intervention.
  • Maintain reliable communication and provide timely responses throughout scheduled coverage periods.

Staff Education & Clinical Resource Support

  • Serve as an experienced clinical and technical resource for nursing staff caring for tracheostomy and/or ventilator-dependent patients.
  • Reinforce proper ventilator equipment handling, circuit management, and recognition of respiratory concerns.
  • Share practical knowledge gained from previous ICU, respiratory therapy, or ventilator patient care experience.
  • Help staff understand and follow established physician-approved protocols and equipment instructions.
  • Identify recurring equipment questions or knowledge gaps that may benefit from additional training.

Documentation & Professional Standards

  • Maintain appropriate documentation of consultations, equipment concerns, and escalations as required.
  • Follow organizational policies, manufacturer instructions, and established clinical protocols.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and use organization-approved secure communication platforms.
  • Collaborate professionally with on-site nurses, facility leadership, and medical providers.
  • Perform all responsibilities within applicable professional licensing requirements, scope-of-practice limitations, and facility policies.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Respiratory Therapist (RT) with relevant ICU, critical care, or respiratory therapy experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of direct, hands-on experience managing mechanically ventilated patients in an ICU, critical care, or respiratory therapy setting.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical ventilators, breathing circuits, ventilator alarms, and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Experience recognizing patient respiratory changes and responding to ventilator-related complications.
  • Ability to interpret ventilator readings and assist nursing staff with evaluating patient responses.
  • Excellent clinical judgment, problem-solving abilities, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, organized, and responsive during urgent situations.
  • Experience collaborating with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates, nurses, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Reliable high-speed internet connection with clear, uninterrupted video and audio capabilities.
  • Availability to provide dependable overnight on-call support during designated US-Pacific hours.
  • Ability to learn facility-specific ventilator models, equipment, and operating procedures.
  • Appropriate professional licensure or authorization for any regulated clinical responsibilities performed for California patients.

  • Previous experience providing staff education, ventilator equipment training, or remote clinical support.
  • Familiarity with multiple ventilator manufacturers, models, and circuit configurations.
  • Experience supporting nursing teams during overnight or after-hours coverage.
