Education : Graduate of Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy, Registered Respiratory Therapist
Experience : At least one (1) year of work experience in a related field

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set ups and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration following specified parameters of treatment.
  • Provide emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Determine requirements for treatment, such as type, method and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosage, compatible with physicians’ orders.
  • Monitor patients’ physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gas and consult with a physician if adverse reactions occur.
  • Read prescriptions and review patient information to assess patient condition.
  • Work as part of a team of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to manage patient care.
  • Enforces safety rules and ensures careful adherence to physicians’ orders.
  • Maintains charts that contain patient’s’ pertinent identification and therapy information.
  • Inspects, cleans, tests and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary.
  • Explains treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation and allay fears.
  • Assists or instructs patients in performance of breathing exercises and bronchopulmonary drainage.
  • Conducts tests such as electrocardiograms and performs arterial blood gas extraction and analysis to evaluate patients’ cardiopulmonary functions.
  • Educates patients and their families about their conditions and teaches appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
  • Teaches, trains, supervises, and utilizes the assistance of students and trainees.
  • Performs tracheostomy care, endotracheal suctioning, related airway maintenance and bronchial hygiene.
  • Attends training programs and learning sessions for the enhancement of professional, technical, and personal proficiencies.
