BASIC FUNCTIONS

The Nursing Service Assistant (Medical Coder) provides support to the nursing staff and assists with clinical documentation and coding activities. This role ensures accurate and timely translation of medical records and charges for billing. The individual will work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, and with the other areas concerned to maintain high-quality patient records and complete charge.

Education : A Senior Highschool Graduate preferably HUMSS or STEM strands, or any two-year course related to health care and/or in computer programs, with certification in medical coding is a plus.

Experience : Withat least one (1) year experience in medical coding, preferably in a clinical or hospital setting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Encodes clinical documentation for accurate diagnosis , procedure and other relevant concerns to the nursing documentation.
  • Ensures complete data is in compliance with regulatory guidelines and hospital policies.
  • Supports the nursing staff in entering and updating data in the Hospital Information System.
  • Communicates with nursing staff to clarify diagnosis and procedures for accurate encoding and charging of the procedures, post charges, medications and medical supplies per patient needs.
  • Communicates with the nursing staff regarding Diet Posting.
  • Encodes the expense requisition needed by the Sections and Units thru the Material Management System.
  • Collaborates with the Billing and Benefits Processing Unit to resolve discrepancies or issues in coded charges.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Participates in audits and quality management activities related to coding accuracy of charges and documentation completeness.
  • Stays updated with current coding guidelines and regulations.
  • Assists for Data Encoding in the Online Monitoring Form of the sections under the Nursing Service Department.
  • Answers telephone inquiries.
  • Assists the Section Head in gathering data necessary for Revenue Reporting.
  • Attends training programs and learning sessions for the enhancement of professional, technical, and personal proficiencies.
