Entry Level Network Engineer jobs

About the role:

We are looking for an Associate Network Specialist to join our technical services team, working across the network that carries NBN, business internet and voice services for hundreds of Australian MSPs. This is a hands-on networking role. You will spend your days diagnosing connectivity faults, reading routing and interface state, configuring customer equipment, and working with carriers to get services delivered and restored.

It suits someone with 1 to 2 years of technical experience who genuinely enjoys packets, protocols and getting to the root cause. You will work alongside experienced network engineers with a clear path into more senior network work.

Key Responsibilities:

Network fault diagnosis

Own incoming network faults end to end where possible. Work out whether the fault sits with the customer's equipment, the NBN service itself, or further upstream in our network, and drive it to resolution.

Access network troubleshooting

Diagnose NBN services across FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, HFC and Fixed Wireless. Interpret line stats and sync rates, check session state, and recognise the difference between a broken service and a congested one.

Routing, switching and customer equipment

Configure and troubleshoot routers, firewalls and switches. Work with static and dynamic routing, VLANs and tagging, NAT, DHCP, DNS and IP addressing.

Monitoring and analysis

Use monitoring platforms, traceroute, MTR, ping and packet capture to identify latency, loss, jitter and path issues, and to spot problems before partners report them.

Provisioning and service delivery

Assist with new service activations, IP allocation, device staging and configuration, and cutovers.

Voice support

Support SIP and VoIP services where they intersect with the network, including call quality investigation, quality of service validation, and number porting.

Carrier coordination

Raise and manage faults with nbn and upstream carriers. Track provider notifications, planned works and outages, and keep internal teams updated.

Documentation

Maintain accurate records against every ticket, document diagnostic steps and resolutions, and contribute network runbooks to the knowledge base.

Security and compliance

Apply secure configuration standards to network and voice equipment and handle partner data appropriately.

Skills and Experience:

• 1 to 2 years in a networking, NOC, ISP or technical support role
• Strong understanding of TCP/IP, subnetting, DNS, DHCP, NAT and VLANs
• Practical experience troubleshooting internet services, ideally Australian nbn technologies
• Comfortable on a command line configuring routers, firewalls or switches
• Able to read a traceroute or packet capture and explain what it is telling you
• Working knowledge of SIP and VoIP fundamentals (3CX, RTP, codecs, quality of service)
• Excellent written and spoken English
• Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills
• Comfortable with ticketing and remote support tools
• CCNA, or actively working toward it

Desirable (Not Required):

• CompTIA Network+ or equivalent
• Exposure to BGP, MPLS or carrier-grade networks
• Monitoring tools such as Zabbix, PRTG or LibreNMS
• Experience with carrier portals or telco provisioning systems
• Familiarity with MikroTik, Fortinet, Cisco or Ubiquiti platforms
• Basic scripting in PowerShell, Bash or Python
