Civil Engineer – Construction & Technical Engineering Support

About the Role

My Online Staff is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to support our Australian client’s construction management, civil infrastructure, and consulting projects.

The role will initially focus on civil infrastructure projects, including road construction, subdivisions, drainage infrastructure, culverts, reinforced concrete structures, bulk earthworks, retaining walls, and water infrastructure.

Our client takes a practical, construction-led approach to engineering. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical design, the emphasis is on developing buildable construction methodologies informed by real-world site experience. Specialist engineering consultants may be engaged where formal design, verification, or certification is required.

We are looking for an engineer who understands construction processes and can translate practical construction requirements into accurate technical drawings, engineering calculations, quantity estimates, and supporting documentation.

Key Responsibilities1. Temporary Works Design & CAD Drafting

• Prepare detailed AutoCAD drawings and preliminary engineering designs for formwork, falsework, concrete structures, excavation support, temporary access roads, working platforms, and construction staging.
• Produce plans, sections, elevations, construction details, material schedules, and supporting calculations.
• Prepare design packages for review and certification by appropriately qualified engineers where required.

2. Quantity Surveying & Estimating

• Complete quantity take-offs from engineering drawings and specifications.
• Prepare bills of quantities, material schedules, and preliminary cost estimates.
• Assist with subcontractor comparisons, procurement activities, and variation assessments.

3. Construction Methodologies

• Develop detailed construction methodologies, staging diagrams, and work sequences.
• Assist with construction programs, resource planning, and temporary works installation procedures.
• Prepare technical supporting documentation for quality, safety, and environmental requirements.

4. General Project Engineering Support

• Review issued-for-construction (IFC) drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Prepare engineering sketches, reinforcement schedules, technical requests for information (RFIs), and design coordination documents.
• Assist with tender preparation, alternative construction solutions, and project technical submissions.

Candidate RequirementsEssential Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Demonstrated experience in civil construction, reinforced concrete, or temporary works.
• Strong understanding of construction methods, processes, and sequencing.
• Experience in quantity surveying, estimating, and engineering calculations.
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
• Good written and spoken English communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage competing deadlines.

Highly Desirable

• Previous experience supporting Australian civil contractors or engineering consultancies.
• Familiarity with Australian Standards, particularly AS 3610, AS 3600, AS 3798, and AS 4678.
• Experience with Transport for NSW specifications and Austroads guidelines.
• Familiarity with Civil 3D, Bluebeam, Procore, or structural analysis software.
• Practical experience with formwork, shoring, temporary works, and reinforced concrete construction.

We are not looking for a CAD operator who simply reproduces drawings based on instructions.

We want a qualified engineer who can assess a construction problem, interpret the available information, identify practical engineering solutions, and prepare the technical documentation needed to support successful project delivery.

The ideal candidate understands that engineering solutions must be:

• Practical and safe to construct.
• Commercially sensible and cost-effective.
• Appropriate for actual site conditions.
• Supported by accurate calculations and technical documentation.

The ability to identify engineering risks, recognise missing information, and communicate technical concerns clearly is particularly important.

Recruitment Process

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview and a short practical technical assessment to evaluate their engineering knowledge, problem-solving skills, and ability to apply practical construction principles.
