JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT CHEMIST – OIL LABORATORY

Department: Laboratory Services (Oil Lab)
Reports To: Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Chemist
Experience: 1–3 years (fresh graduates with high potential also acceptable)
Job Level: Technical Staff
Work Setup: Onsite, laboratory environment

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 5:30pm with possible overtime

ROLE SUMMARY

The Assistant Chemist supports the Oil Laboratory in testing, analysis, reporting, and maintaining laboratory quality systems.
This role ensures that all oil samples (transformer oil, turbine oil, lubricant oil, insulating oils) are processed accurately, on time, and according to ISO and internal standards.

This position is essential to Westco’s Reliability & Condition Monitoring ecosystem, feeding data into reporting, diagnostics, and predictive maintenance insights.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Laboratory Testing & Analysis

  • Perform physicochemical tests (Moisture, BDV, Acidity, IFT, Viscosity, TAN, Color, etc.)
  • Conduct dissolved gas analysis (DGA) sample preparation
  • Operate laboratory instruments (Karl Fischer, BDV tester, centrifuge, GC prep machines, ovens)
  • Ensure calibration, standardization, and proper instrument maintenance
  • Follow standard test methods (IEC, ASTM, ISO)

2. Sample Handling & Documentation

  • Receive, label, log, and prepare samples carefully
  • Maintain chain-of-custody procedures
  • Ensure proper sample storage and disposal
  • Encode all results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)

3. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Follow ISO 9001:2015 requirements
  • Conduct daily QC checks (standards, blanks, calibration verification)
  • Support proficiency testing (PT), method validation, and uncertainty calculation
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and laboratory protocols

4. Reporting & Client Support

  • Prepare accurate preliminary test results
  • Coordinate with clients regarding missing information, delays, or clarifications
  • Support generation of final oil analysis reports
  • Explain basic interpretations to internal teams (Engineering, Sales)

5. Laboratory Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of lab benches
  • Ensure proper inventory of chemicals, consumables, glassware
  • Support calibration and troubleshooting of instruments
  • Report equipment issues immediately to Supervisor

Laboratory Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of oil testing methods (ASTM, IEC)
  • Familiarity with equipment: Karl Fischer, BDV, viscometer, centrifuge
  • Experience in titration, solvent preparation, solution standards
  • Ability to identify oil degradation characteristics
  • Understanding of transformer oil chemistry (advantage)

QUALIFICATIONS & BACKGROUNDEducation

  • BS Chemistry, BS Chemical Engineering, BS Industrial Chemistry, or related science course
  • Licensed Chemist / Licensed Chemical Technician (advantage but not required)

Experience

  • 1–3 years laboratory experience in:
  • Oil testing Chemical testing Environmental labs Calibration labs QA/QC labs
  • New graduates with strong lab training may be considered

Experience in transformer oil testing

  • Exposure to DGA preparation or GC operations
  • Familiarity with condition monitoring or reliability labs
